✅ Ingredients (Only 2 Ingredients!)
- 1 can (14 oz / 400 g) sweetened condensed milk
- 1 tablespoon white sugar (optional but helps caramelize faster)
(Optional flavor boosters: 1 tsp vanilla extract, pinch of sea salt)
🍳 How to Make Homemade Dulce de Leche (Stovetop Method – Easiest & Safest)
1. Prepare the Condensed Milk
You can use it inside the can or transfer to a glass jar:
- Remove the label from the can.
- Make sure the can is unopened and undamaged.
2. Place in a Pot
- Put the sealed can on its side in a large pot.
- Cover with 2–3 inches of water above the can (VERY important to avoid bursting).
3. Simmer Slowly
- Bring the water to a gentle boil.
- Reduce to low heat and simmer for:
- 2 hours → lighter, soft dulce de leche
- 3 hours → thicker caramel dulce de leche
- 3.5–4 hours → deep, dark dulce de leche
🔔 Add hot water every 20–30 mins to keep the can fully submerged.
4. Cool Completely
- Turn off the heat.
- Let the can cool in the water until room temperature.
Do NOT open while hot — can be dangerous.
5. Open the Can
When cooled, open the can and enjoy your creamy homemade dulce de leche.
🍯 Alternative Method: Water Bath in Jars (Safer + Control Thickness)
- Pour condensed milk into heat-safe glass jars.
- Add the optional 1 tbsp sugar and stir.
- Seal the jars tightly.
- Place them in a pot with water covering the jars by 2 inches.
- Simmer for 2–3 hours, depending on desired color.
