Homemade Dulce de Leche

Ingredients (Only 2 Ingredients!)

  • 1 can (14 oz / 400 g) sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 tablespoon white sugar (optional but helps caramelize faster)

(Optional flavor boosters: 1 tsp vanilla extract, pinch of sea salt)

🍳 How to Make Homemade Dulce de Leche (Stovetop Method – Easiest & Safest)

1. Prepare the Condensed Milk

You can use it inside the can or transfer to a glass jar:

  • Remove the label from the can.
  • Make sure the can is unopened and undamaged.

2. Place in a Pot

  • Put the sealed can on its side in a large pot.
  • Cover with 2–3 inches of water above the can (VERY important to avoid bursting).

3. Simmer Slowly

  • Bring the water to a gentle boil.
  • Reduce to low heat and simmer for:
    • 2 hours → lighter, soft dulce de leche
    • 3 hours → thicker caramel dulce de leche
    • 3.5–4 hours → deep, dark dulce de leche

🔔 Add hot water every 20–30 mins to keep the can fully submerged.

4. Cool Completely

  • Turn off the heat.
  • Let the can cool in the water until room temperature.
Do NOT open while hot — can be dangerous.

5. Open the Can

When cooled, open the can and enjoy your creamy homemade dulce de leche.

🍯 Alternative Method: Water Bath in Jars (Safer + Control Thickness)

  1. Pour condensed milk into heat-safe glass jars.
  2. Add the optional 1 tbsp sugar and stir.
  3. Seal the jars tightly.
  4. Place them in a pot with water covering the jars by 2 inches.
  5. Simmer for 2–3 hours, depending on desired color.

Tips for Perfect Dulce de Leche

  • Stir in vanilla extract after cooling for extra flavor.
  • Add a pinch of salt to make salted dulce de leche.
  • Store in the fridge for up to 2–3 weeks.
  • Warm slightly before serving for drizzling consistency.
