๐ณ How to Make Homemade Dulce de Leche (Stovetop Method โ Easiest & Safest)
1. Prepare the Condensed Milk
You can use it inside the can or transfer to a glass jar:
- Remove the label from the can.
- Make sure the can is unopened and undamaged.
2. Place in a Pot
- Put the sealed can on its side in a large pot.
- Cover with 2โ3 inches of water above the can (VERY important to avoid bursting).
3. Simmer Slowly
- Bring the water to a gentle boil.
- Reduce to low heat and simmer for:
- 2 hours โ lighter, soft dulce de leche
- 3 hours โ thicker caramel dulce de leche
- 3.5โ4 hours โ deep, dark dulce de leche
๐ Add hot water every 20โ30 mins to keep the can fully submerged.
4. Cool Completely
- Turn off the heat.
- Let the can cool in the water until room temperature.
Do NOT open while hot โ can be dangerous.
5. Open the Can
When cooled, open the can and enjoy your creamy homemade dulce de leche.

- Pour condensed milk into heat-safe glass jars.
- Add the optional 1 tbsp sugar and stir.
- Seal the jars tightly.
- Place them in a pot with water covering the jars by 2 inches.
- Simmer for 2โ3 hours, depending on desired color.

- Stir in vanilla extract after cooling for extra flavor.
