Old-School German Chocolate Cake

Ingredients

For the Chocolate Cake:

2 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup granulated sugar
1 cup brown sugar
¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
½ teaspoon salt
1 cup milk
½ cup vegetable oil
2 large eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup hot water
For the Coconut-Pecan Frosting:

1 cup evaporated milk
1 cup brown sugar
3 egg yolks
½ cup unsalted butter
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup shredded sweetened coconut
1 cup chopped pecans
Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Cake

Preheat oven to 350°F (180°C).
In a large bowl, mix flour, cocoa powder, granulated sugar, brown sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
Add milk, oil, eggs, and vanilla extract. Mix until smooth.
Slowly add hot water and mix (the batter will be thin).
Pour into two greased round cake pans.
Bake for 30–35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
Let cakes cool completely before frosting.
Step 2: Prepare the Coconut-Pecan Frosting

In a saucepan over medium heat, combine evaporated milk, brown sugar, egg yolks, and butter.
Stir constantly until the mixture thickens (about 10–12 minutes).
Remove from heat and stir in vanilla.
Add shredded coconut and chopped pecans.
Let frosting cool until spreadable.
